Cameroon: Staff of Christian hospital under attack

Separatists calling themselves Bui Unity Warriors abducted five health workers from Banso Baptist Hospital in Cameroon’s English-speaking Northwest region on 25 September 2022.

As reported by HumAngle on 29 September 2022, suspected ISWAP fighters killed a police officer and a nurse in two separate incidents in Mora sub-division of the Far North region. The attacks took place 24-27 September 2022. In a separate incident, as reported by VOA News on 27 September 2022, separatists calling themselves Bui Unity Warriors abducted five health workers from Banso Baptist Hospital on 25 September 2022. Bui is an administrative unit in Cameroon’s English-speaking Northwest region.

World Watch Research Analyst Yonas Dembele comments: “According to Bui separatist videos on social media, the hospital attack was retaliation for recent government action in which troops entered the Christian-run hospital, killing one separatist and arresting three others. Hospital staff face difficulties from all sides of the conflict; indeed, Christians are among some of the primary victims of attacks by both separatists and Islamist groups. For the latter, due to the current insecurity in neighboring countries, supplies of fighters, arms and ideology are readily accessible for fueling violent jihad against non-Muslims.”
