Maldives Election Commission announced that presidential elections will be held on 9 September 2023 (The Maldives Journal, 15 January 2023).
World Watch Research analyst Thomas Muller explains: “These elections promise to be very interesting. The ruling party MDP has two candidates for the presidency, incumbent President Solih and former President Nasheed and, as a result, some analysts say that a split in the party may arise (South Asia Monitor, 3 December 2022). Such a split would most likely benefit the even stricter Islamic parties and lead to a further tightening of the already very narrow space for the few Christians on the islands. But this is also worrying against the background of radical Islamic influences which are still very active in the Maldives: As recently as November 2022, 14 people were arrested on suspicion of planning operations with the Islamic State group (ABC News, 15 November 2022).”
