Burkina Faso: Attack by Islamic militant group leads to ‘mutiny rumors’

According to a report by BBC News on 20 June 2024, al-Qaeda affiliate Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM) has claimed responsibility for an attack on 11 June 2024 in Mansila, in northern Burkina Faso, close to the Niger border. JNIM claimed in a video to have captured a large amount of weapons and ammunition during the assault which will likely boost its operational capabilities. The attack resulted in the death of over 100 Burkina Faso troops and has led to speculation about internal tensions within the armed forces. The day after the attack, a rocket exploded outside a state TV broadcasting station in the capital, Ouagadougou, which some think may have been linked to military discontent.

World Watch Research analyst Yonas Dembele comments: “The attack on 11 June was one of the deadliest suffered by Burkina Faso’s army in recent years. The captured weapons could enable JNIM to launch potentially larger-scale attacks in the future, further destabilizing the region. The Islamist insurgency has been ongoing for over a decade, and about half the country is currently outside government control. The conflict has caused a humanitarian crisis, with thousands of people displaced and many more facing severe shortages of food. Jihadist groups have also targeted Christian communities and forced churches in areas under their control to close. The country’s military leadership under Captain Ibrahim Traoré has faced great difficulty in coping with the continual attacks by groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State network. This major attack in June certainly raises questions about the effectiveness of current military strategy.”
