Indonesia: President Prabowo’s win confirmed

Show: false / Country: Indonesia /

The Constitutional Court has rejected the election challenges brought by the two defeated presidential candidates, thus confirming Prabowo Subianto’s presidency (AP News, 22 April 2024).

World Watch Research (WWR) analyst Thomas Muller comments: “While this decision did not exactly come as a surprise and Prabowo Subianto looks set to more or less continue outgoing President Jokowi’s political line, it was interesting to see that Muhammad Rizieq Shihab, founder of the now largely defunct Islamic Defenders’ Front (FPI), had a brief public appearance again. He had been comparatively silent for the last two years and did not publicly back any of the presidential candidates. However, he appeared as ‘amicus curiae’ in the 2024 procedures before the Constitutional Court, where the losing presidential candidates disputed the results (Voice of Indonesia, 17 April 2024). Although this does not mean he intends to wield public influence again, it is a good reminder that both conservative and radical Islamic influences and influencers are never far away.”
