Kenya: Protests turn violent

Show: false / Country: Kenya /

As reported by CNN on 27 June 2024, fresh waves of protests and riots swept through Kenya in June in response to a proposed finance bill, which citizens said would worsen the already high cost of living and drive them further into poverty. The demonstrations started peacefully but soon turned violent and led to the death of some 20 civilians before the proposed bill was withdrawn by the president on 26 June.

World Watch Research analyst Yonas Dembele comments:  “Although this occurrence does not have a direct impact on the Christian community, it can certainly have an indirect implication for Christians. Civil unrest in Kenya will always have ramifications for the nation’s security, when viewed in connection with the past decade of battling against al-Shabaab incursions. Al-Shabaab has mainly been attacking the northeastern part of the country, but a Kenya in crisis would serve to make the danger posed by al-Shabaab all the more potent. If the security forces divert their attention to controlling protests, that can give al-Shabaab an opportunity to strike.”
