As reported by Reuters on 1 October 2023, Mali’s northern Tuareg rebels seized a fourth military base since the UN peacekeeping mission left in August 2022.
World Watch Research analyst Yonas Dembele comments: “The rebel alliance called the Coordi-nation of Azawad Movements (CMA) took control of a fourth military base (this time in the city of Bamba between Timbuktu and Gao), as part of a broader strategy to weaken the Malian army. The resurgence of rebel operations in the region, particularly through the radical Islamic CMA, which has links with al-Qaeda (AQIM), not only continues to weaken the army and undermine the country's stability and security but also has far-reaching implications for Christians. The ability for Christians to meet and practice their faith has become increasingly restricted and risky due to the deteriorating security. This alarming scenario has the potential to spill over into neighboring areas, further destabilizing the region. Mali is rapidly becoming one of the most unstable countries in West Africa.”
