Show: false / Country: Mozambique /

According to a report by DW on 20 March 2024, Mozambique's Cabo Delgado province is facing renewed violence as international insurgents strengthen their network in the region. The situation has led to significant displacement, with around 100,000 people, including over 61,000 children, fleeing their homes between early February and early March 2024. The insurgent group in the region, known as Ansar al-Sunna has been affiliated with the Islamic State group since 2019 and has once more carried out a series of brutal attacks, including beheadings and kidnappings.

World Watch Research analyst Yonas Dembele comments: “With the rise of jihadist groups targeting Christians, the situation in northern Mozambique represents a profound crisis for these communities. For seven years, the violence has not only disrupted daily life but also instilled a deep-rooted fear and vulnerability among Christians. These targeted attacks go beyond physical harm, affecting the psychological well-being and cultural fabric of Christian communities.”
