As reported by Al-Jazeera on 26 June 2024, rebel groups attacked security forces near the village of Tassia in the Tillaberi region of western Niger, killing at least 20 soldiers and 1 civilian.
World Watch Research analyst Yonas Dembele comments: “Tassia is in the Tillaberi region bordering Mali and Burkina Faso, where rebels linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group have run rampant for almost a decade. The frequency and intensity of attacks on Nigerien security forces have surged, particularly following the military coup in July 2023. This attack highlights the volatile security situation in Niger and the broader Sahel region: Attacks continue to take place with the apparent objective of weakening the security apparatus to pave the way for Islamic militants to take control of the country. For the minority Christian communities in western Niger, the escalating jihadist violence poses a grave threat to them.”
