Niger: Ousted president to stand trial for alleged financing of terrorism

Show: false / Country: Niger /

According to a report by BBC News on 15 June 2024, Niger’s highest court has ruled that the immunity of former President Mohamed Bazoum, who was ousted by the military coup nearly a year ago, should be lifted. This decision allows the military leaders to prosecute him for alleged high treason, undermining national security, and financing terrorism. Meanwhile, a report by the Africa Center for Strategic Studies (ACSS) published on 13 May 2024, shows that fatalities linked to Islamic extremist groups are projected to reach more than 1,600 in 2024—a 60% increase from 2023.

World Watch Research analyst Yonas Dembele comments: “For several years, Niger has been facing a growing threat from various groups of Islamic extremists. These include Boko Haram in neighboring Nigeria and Chad, as well as the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara and the al-Qaeda affiliate Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) which both operate in the border areas between Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso. Over time, these groups have greatly expanded their reach in the Sahel. The July 2023 coup in Niger has resulted in a deterioration of the security situation as shown in the ACSS report. As in many countries where violent Islamic militancy is rife, the Christian minority in Niger is constantly at risk of being targeted.”

Yonas Dembele continues: “The trial of former President Bazoum could have significant implications for Niger, particularly if he is found guilty. A positive result might be that it sets a precedent for holding political leaders accountable for supporting or financing extremist groups. However, it could also lead to further instability and potentially even more political unrest in the country. This instability could see Islamic militancy further expanding in Niger, and further endangering civilians, particularly vulnerable Christian communities.”
