Nigeria: Clergy kidnapping continues

Show: false / Country: Nigeria /

Christians belonging to the Church of Christ in Nigeria in Kaduna are praying for the release of Pastor Paul Musa, who was abducted on 23 March 2023, one of the hundreds of victims of Nigeria’s so-called ‘clergy abduction spree.’ As reported by Truth Nigeria on 29 June 2024, Boko Haram released disturbing videos of Pastor Paul Musa and his wife, demanding around $40,000 US for their lives.

“The targeting of Christian figures is clear, but not acknowledged by the authorities,” notes Naomi Williams of World Watch Research. “In March 2024, cleric Imam Idris Tenshi openly stated that Nigeria’s First Lady should be killed, because ‘she is a leader amongst the unbelievers.’ First Lady Remi Tinubu is a Pentecostal pastor. Tenshi’s statements go some way to explaining the large numbers of Christian leaders being abducted. Other videos displaying the kidnapped Roman Catholic priest, Mikah Suleiman, pleading for his life were also released in June.  In 2022, the Roman Catholic church recorded 118 Catholic clergy abductions and 16 murders.” Marcela Scymanski of Aid to the Church in Need told World Watch Research:  “When you kidnap a priest,  it’s the same impact as a terror attack. Take away the shepherd – and you scatter the flock.”
