North Korea: Kim Jong Un’s picture appears on official badges

Show: false / Country: North Korea /

Time Magazine reported on 1 July 2024 that all officials at a recent Worker Party’s meeting were shown wearing badges depicting Kim Jong Un.

World Watch Research analyst Thomas Muller comments: “The fact that officials (and likely soon everyone) have to wear these badges to show their loyalty to the North Korean leader is neither new nor surprising. Badges showing Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il have been worn for decades. But it seems that after ruling the country for ten years, Kim Jong Un is sufficiently self-confident and maybe also sees the need for this show of loyalty.”

Thomas Muller adds: “For Christians, whose loyalty is anyway questioned and who belong to the ‘hostile class’, this strengthening of ideological affiliation confirms that they do not have any (public) space in society. With more and more visible signs of rural development and transformation appearing across the country (28 North, 26 June 2024), Kim Jong Un works hard to show that the regime can deliver tangible results for the people, at least for those deemed loyal.”
