As reported by Deutsche Welle on 17 March 2023 and other news outlets, the US government has pledged 150 million USD for humanitarian aid in the Sahel region. During his recent visit to Niger, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said: "Niger is a young democracy in a challenging part of the world. But it remains true to the values we share. Niger has been quick to defend the democratic values under threat in neighboring countries."

World Watch Research analyst Yonas Dembele comments: “The Sahel region is in turmoil. Coups in Mali and Burkina Faso have further exacerbated an already fragile situation. So far, Niger has proved resilient against coups that have been frequent in the region. However, the situation has worsened through the presence of Russian mercenary group Wagner, which has been accused of committing atrocities. The visit by the US Secretary of the State and the promise of large-scale humanitarian aid comes at a critical time.”
