Egypt: Improved security is goal of Qatar "blockade"

Following the diplomatic isolation of Qatar in the Arab world, as mentioned in the World Watch Research update posted on 13 June 2017, Qatar has responded that this "blockade" is "uncivilized" and "an act of aggression", according to NDTV on 19 June 2017. Both the Egyptian government and Saudi Arabia have stated that the diplomatic and economic measures are necessary to end Qatar"s support for various radical Islamic groups which they consider to be terrorist organizations. Both governments also expressed their frustration with the sympathetic coverage that the Qatar based Al-Jazeera news agency provides for Islamist groups in the region. Yonas Dembele, persecution analyst at World Watch Research (WWR), comments: "The Egyptian government has been indicating for some time that Turkey and Qatar are supporting the Muslim Brotherhood and other militant Islamic groups which are aiming to destabilize Egypt and are conducting attacks against Christians and Egyptian security forces.‚  While it will be difficult to predict how this diplomatic row with Qatar will unfold, if it ends up in a reduction of support reaching various militant groups in Egypt from countries like Qatar, it could mean an improvement in the security situation in Egypt and that will be welcome news to Egyptian Christians."
