As reported by France 24 on 1 July 2022, the French-led Takuba task force officially ceased operations in Mali on 30 June 2022. The European Union’s special forces group operated in conjunction with France’s Barkhane force, bringing together up to 900 elite troops from Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden. Takuba aimed to train and reinforce regional government troops in combating al-Qaeda and Islamic State group insurgencies.

World Watch Research analyst Yonas Dembele comments: “The withdrawal of Takuba means a significant setback for all counter-terrorism operations in the country. Mali is plagued by rebel attacks, and lately serious food insecurity also threatens the country. The impoverished country will be stretched to cope with a difficult future ahead.”
