As reported by Aciprensa on 9 March 2022, three churches in Mexico were
vandalized by radical feminist groups during the marches celebrating International Women"s Day on 8 March. One church in Guadalajara (Jalisco) and two in Xalapa (Puebla) were daubed with graffiti slogans such as "˜abortion is legal", "˜paedophiles" and "˜rapists" and some structural damage was also caused. In addition, the Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City, the Cathedral in Leon and the Cathedral in Aguascalientes had to be protected by police and parishioners to prevent feminist groups from causing damage.
World Watch Research analyst Rossana Ramirez comments: "In recent years, the marches to celebrate International Women's Day have been an occasion not only to protest about the social inequalities that still affect women, they have also been hijacked by radical pressure groups to express their intolerance towards the Catholic Church, for instance, in its stance against abortion, which many secular groups consider to be a women's right over her own body."
Rossana Ramirez continues: "It is worrying that the trend of vandalizing churches on International Women"s Day continues year after year. It has a negative effect on the life of church congregations and also of local communities which benefit from the many social projects run by the churches. The perpetrators of such attacks should not be allowed to act with impunity, since their aggressive actions have an impact on the right to religious freedom as well as having more than just material repercussions."
